Uploading Folder issue

UPDATE: Fixed in the latest version of gogoDocs (1.1.4). Head over to the app store to get your copy.

We are currently working on an issue where a folder that was uploaded through the Google Docs web site using the new “upload folder” functionality does not appear in gogoDocs. For now, we recommend that you upload files via the two other means if you wish to view them in gogoDocs.

UPDATE:

The reason that they’re not showing at the moment is that the documents themselves, but not the containing folders are marked as hidden on upload (or “Don’t show in home”). We do some fancy filtering of the feed to remove hidden files and empty folders as Google Docs used to treat hidden files somewhat differently than they do now. Since hidden files are removed in gogoDocs so are those, now empty, folders. We’re working on an update that makes your files and folders list more accurately follow the way Google now displays them.

Workaround:

Currently the easiest way to view any files uploaded in this manner is to log into Google docs through your browser and mark each document you want to see in gogoDocs with “Show in home.” This will unset the hidden flag on the documents. You can select multiple documents to make this go faster. Here is what it looks like on Google Docs when you do this.

(Fixed) Empty docs errors

We have been seeing PDF files repeatedly exporting incorrectly from google’s servers, which causes an “empty docs” error and which eventually causes a CAPTCHA error. This has been happening lately to a lot of applications that use the documents API from Google and is a bug in the Google Docs servers. This has been happening since about last Wednesday; Google tells us that they are working on it.

Update: Looks like this is working now. See Here for Google’s progress in case the issue comes up again.

Invalid file format errors

Update: The latest version of gogoDocs fixes this bug.

Google has a bug in their export server that is causing documents requested to come down in the wrong format. The issue is documented here:

http://code.google.com/p/gdata-issues/issues/detail?id=2157

This is the error you would see in gogoDocs: “This document can’t be viewed. The file format is invalid.”

If you would please login to your google account and put a star on that issue, it would help to get them to fix it faster. We are also working on a workaround in our code, but as you probably know, Apple’s update and approval process means that we are at least a week from seeing that version in the app store.

This problem is specific to using Google’s new editor to make docs. You can turn that editor off in your Google docs preferences. Uncheck the box labeled “Create new text documents using the latest verson of the document editor.” Doing so will make all new documents viewable in gogoDocs. You may have to copy and paste any problematical documents (or export and reimport them) to get those to work.

iPhone 4 prettification

If you bought a shiny new iPhone 4, you might notice some pixel jaggies when you’re using the current version gogoDocs. Rest assured that as soon as our already submitted bugfix version is approved by apple we’ll submit a new version that makes your PDFs look just as clear and crisp as that retina display can render them. If you want to test our iPhone 4 version, get in touch!

Read this if you share docs as editable by anyone

Update: The latest version of gogoDocs fixes this bug.

Google has recently changed the XML representation they give our application regarding who you are sharing your documents with; they have added access to whether you are sharing a document by publishing it to anyone / everyone who knows the URL. Since that information is not expected by either version (iPhone or iPad) of gogoDocs, the application crashes when you scroll to a document that is shared to anyone / everyone where anyone is also allowed to edit the document. The crash only happens under the very narrow circumstance wherein everyone can see and edit your document.

If you’re willing to temporarily turn off worldwide editing of any document you’ve shared, that should keep the app running happily while we wait for Apple’s approval of the fixed version. If you are unable to do so, we are offering a limited number of beta copies of the application to users who have hit this bug, we ask only that you delete the beta version and install the official version from the app store once it is approved as it will eventually expire.

If you would like to join the beta test group, please contact us at:

Operation could not be completed (Internal error) is a Google server issue

If you have seen this error message, you are not alone. This is a problem with the Google docs servers. As it turns out, this is an error that is happening to a small percentage of users of a number of applications that use the Google docs API servers, not just gogoDocs. Some files that are not “normal” Google docs, those files uploaded using Google’s relatively new feature of being able to upload any file, will suddenly and consistently trip this error. One thing you can try is to remove any files you might have uploaded to Google docs around the time that this error cropped – up. If you do find a specific file that causes it, do PLEASE (!) let us know what kind of file it is as it seems that it only happens to a small number of accounts and a small number of files.

The engineers at Google are much more likely to find the problem if we are able to give them more information about it. See here, here, and here and star the issues and/or add any information you are able to find to the comments thereof. The more stars an issue gets the more attention and higher priority it gets from the Google engineers.
